I’m Joey Rositano, author, photo book maker and idea-smith at my other substack Art Blades Out (coming soon).
I wrote a book on shamanism in South Korea, made some videos, did a TEDx talk, and wrote this book of interviews with women divers on Jeju Island. See my work featured on Lisa See’s website for her New York Times bestseller The Island of Sea Women.
Some of the content here is material migrated from Pagans We Are, the blog I began writing in South Korea in 2015.1 These migrated posts will explore different aspects of the shamanic religion on Jeju Island. If you already read Pagans We Are back in the day, don’t worry I’ll be covering much more here.
For the first year of this publication I’ll write about the essential elements of shamanism on Jeju Island.
If you’re a Jeju Island expat teaching on the island or elsewhere in Korea and would like a lesson plan on Jeju’s shamanic pantheon of gods, feel free to get in touch.

Paid subscribers will get access to special monthly posts that will include things I’ve been thinking about related to shamanism, South Korea, nature, sacred trees, crows2 and more.
Paid posts may sometimes be related to Korea, but most of the time I’ll cover global things with some Korea sprinkled in.

It all started with a desecrated shamanic shrine.
